AAC and Alternative Communication

More Ways to Communicate Through AAC Support

Everyone deserves a way to express needs, ideas, preferences, questions, and feelings. Augmentative and Alternative Communication, often called AAC, can provide additional communication options for people who need support using speech or who communicate in more than one way.

Desert Speech Therapy provides individualized AAC evaluation and therapy support for children and adults in Rancho Mirage and throughout the Coachella Valley. We consider the person, their communication partners, their routines, and the goals that are most meaningful to them.

AAC Begins With the Individual

There is no single communication system that works for every person. An AAC evaluation explores current communication, strengths, preferences, access needs, daily environments, and the kinds of messages a person wants to share. The process is designed to identify options that feel meaningful and practical.

We look beyond the technology itself. A communication system should support the person’s participation and reflect their personality, relationships, interests, and priorities. The right approach may involve one method or a combination of communication supports.

Communication Across Daily Routines

AAC support is about more than using a tool during therapy. It is about helping a person communicate across the moments that matter, such as making choices, requesting assistance, joining an activity, greeting someone, sharing an opinion, or expressing discomfort.

We connect practice to real routines so communication has an immediate purpose. When partners understand how to offer access, wait for responses, and respond meaningfully, the person has more opportunities to take an active role in interactions.

Building Skills and Communication Confidence

Therapy may support learning how to navigate a system, find useful vocabulary, combine messages, respond to others, initiate communication, or repair a breakdown. The pace and focus are adjusted to the individual’s current abilities and goals.

Progress can include more than producing a particular number of words or messages. It may also involve increased independence, more consistent access to communication, stronger participation, and greater confidence in expressing a thought or need.

Supporting Communication Partners

AAC works best when the people around the individual know how to support it during everyday interactions. We collaborate with families, caregivers, and other communication partners to discuss modeling, wait time, access, and ways to respond to all forms of communication.

Our goal is to make AAC feel like a natural part of life rather than something reserved for a therapy session. With consistent support and meaningful opportunities to communicate, individuals can build connections in ways that are personal and effective.
